Metallography is the study of the physical structure and components of metals, by using microscopy. Ceramic and polymeric materials may also be prepared using metallographic techniques, hence the terms ceramography, plastography and, collectively, materialography. Cyril Smith's study of the structure of metals and alloys and the properties that result from their processing remains, after more than two decades, a foundational work on the history of metallography. It starts from the intuitive knowledge of metals achieved by such early artists and craftsmen as Biringuccio, Descartes, Réaumur, Bréant, Osmond, Sorby, Brinell, Tschernoff, Howe, Percy and.

It contains an extensive collection of micro- and macrographs.5/5(2). Rinmann promoted this technique in his book On the Etching of Iron and Steel, written in the late s.

Sorby, in his classic work published in "On the Microscopical Structure of Iron and Steel," showed "nature prints," which were inked contact prints of steel etched in moderately strong aqueous nitric acid. Volume 9 is a comprehensive guide to metallography and its application in product design and manufacturing.

It provides detailed information on a wide range of metallographic techniques and how to interpret the microstructure and phase constituents commonly. An English translation of the second edition, this book is an outstanding source of etchants of all types, and electrolytic polishing solutions used by metallographers to reveal the structure of nearly any material ever prepared and examined.

The introductory text on specimen preparation and theory of etching has been expanded and updated to cover all common procedures as well as some 4/5(1).

Technicains, laboratory personnel, designers, purchasers and salespeople agree - if you work for a metals-related company, you need this basic reference for the non-metallurgist. ItAs written for beginners as wel as those who need to refresh their understanding of a particular topic.
